10/5/07
Ok, this time I am reverting to the good old e-mail system for the Troop NewsMail. Be sure to check out the troop website for additional
news, weather traffic and sports.www.troop174nm.org

COURT OF HONOR
Monday night is the COH for the Troop. Please come and bring a pot luck item. We are asking for a Main and one Side dish from each family. Please come and support your kids. We would love to see all the family members there. The Pot-Luck is from 6:30 til 7:30 followed by the Court of Honor.
SUMMER CAMP:
The applications fro summer camp have been passed out to those at the troop meetings. There is also one attached to this e-mail. Please complete the applications and return them by 15 October 2007. Please call me with any questions or concerns about summer camp. Please remember that this is what the boys want to do. We should try to make it happen. There are and will be numerous fundraisers available for the scouts to earn the cost of this camp. Remember that a scout is thrifty, that the should work towards a goal. They should learn to budget and plan for something they want. We will need at minimum 15 Scouts and 5 Adults (The camp rules require 2 adults to be in the campsite at all times) to attend this event for it to be viable. So, remember that applications and a $100 deposit will be due on the 15 October.
FUNDRAISERS:
POPCORN:
The deadline for Popcorn Orders is the 15th of October - that's less than two weeks away! Remember that 35% of sales comes back to the scout. This is a great opportunity to earn money for camp. A $1000 in sales is $350 in your account.
MALL "EVENING OF GIVING":
Cottonwood Mall is opening the doors from 5pm til 9pm on Sunday, November 18. There will be door prizes, raffles, wine and cheese tasting, and BIG SALES for only those that purchase tickets. The tickets are $10 each and ALL the proceeds go to charity - a write-off! Each person 15 or over will need a ticket. When you sell the ticket give the whole ticket to the buyer. They will fill in the bottom and drop it in a box when entering the mall to enter the drawing. The top portion will be exchanged for a wrist band that will let them in the mall. By November 16 we will collect $10 for any sold ticket and collect unused tickets at that time. We will then put $7 from each ticket sold into the scouts account. The remaining $3 goes back to the mall to support the Simon Mall Youth Foundation.
This is the 4th or 5th year the mall has done this. We have attended the last two or three. Each year it gets bigger and better. This is a fun family evening with things to do, entertainment and best of all Sales so you can get a jump on Christmas. Please call me if you need more information. I have attached the info sheet from the mall and the sales list for your information. Remember you get $7 for each ticket sold! That is a 70% return fundraiser!
SPAGHETTI SUPPER
November 3 is the annual Spaghetti Supper. This is a fundraiser for the troop. This is the event that the troop earns the monies it needs to function for the year. We ask that each family sell 10 tickets and 2 advertising spots. The advertising spot is a business card printed onto the place-mats at each seat. The advertising is $50 per spot. Please collect a business card to use for this purpose. They get the form that was handed out and two tickets to the dinner. Mr. Unsworth is in charge of this event. Please see him to collect tickets and/or to ask any questions. Please full participation in the Spaghetti Supper is strongly encouraged. This is how the troop operates. If we do not meet our goals we will need to look at future events or collect these funds from the members of the troop. We do not want to raise dues or costs associated with being a member of this troop. All troops need funds to operate, to buy equipment and fund other events.
WEBELOS INVITATIONAL
The WEBELOS Invitational is 26, 27, and 28 of October. I know we will need help with different stations and activities throughout the weekend. Please sign up to go as soon as possible and let us know of your favorite interests or activity you would like to help out with. Most of us have done WEBELOS and remember how much fun the kids had on campouts.

1. The scoutmaster is having problems with the Troop web site and is currently unable to upload changes to the site. If anyone has expertise in Windows Explorer and web sites, please give the scoutmaster a call. It may be a while before changes can be made to the web site so please be understanding.
2. This Sunday (8/12) there will be a Patrol Leaders Council meeting for Troop Officers, Patrol Leaders and assistants. The meeting will be at the church from 3-4 PM. Wear Troop T-Shirt. A good portion of the meeting will be to discuss activities for the next year.
3. A Parent Meeting will be held next Monday (8/13) at 7:15 P at the church. The topics will be Upcoming Campout, Web site sign-up for events, adult/Leader help needed, payment of fees/accounts, Q & A, and much more. Parents – please try to attend this meeting.
4. Scouting centenary: The World Jamboree for Scouts has been held in England over the past couple of weeks. There were over 40,000 scouts attending and all but 5 countries in the world had Scouts participating. Also 100 years ago (from August 1) the first Boy Scout Camp was held on Brownsea Island in England so there were celebrations for that event. By clicking on the link below, one can see some pictures of the Scouting Centenary from BBC:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/in_pictures/6925987.stm
5. Chuck Thompson found out that the Presbyterian Hospital will be conducting Project Heartstart CPR training. They offer a class for adult CPR and a class for pediatric CPR. The adult CPR class has the capability to teach up to 40 persons at a time including hands on work. They said Scouts could attend the training—they are not taking reservations and their plan is to have a class every 30 minutes and they will just cycle people through as they queue up. Hours are 9 to 3 on August 18. The training will be held at the Presbyterian Clinical Education Building:8100 Constitution Place NE, Suite 100 (go to back of building). Call 291-5395 if you have questions about the training. This training should fulfill First Aid MB requirement 3c.
6. Marina DiPilato was able to find all the things needed for the home first aid kit for the First Aid Merit Badge at the site below (we had been to Walgreens and they didn't have a lot of it). They email you a coupon for $15 off if you ask and shipping is free over $50 (and ours was over $50 by the time we got stuff for Anthony and Mario).
https://www.firstaidsuppliesonline.com/
7. Last Saturday we had a great canoeing day at Cochiti Lake. As our group was small and we had 5 canoes, we were able to canoe up the canyon for a way after we spent some time with getting out of and into canoes, swamping and canoe over canoe rescues. The Scouts and adults attending were:
Crows: Kevin K, Abram L, and Paul T
Flaming Arrows: Anthony T, and Kyle W
Scorpions: Austin K
Wolves: Matthew K, Carlo R, and Thomas T
Leadership: Chris M, and Sheldon H
Adults: Rick M, James K, Chuck T, Carl W, and George R
8. San Pedro Parks Wilderness backpack Fishing Campout (8/25-26): Our next campout is going to be a backpacking campout in the Jemez Mountains in the Clear Creek area near San Gregorio Lake. We hope to spend some time fishing, and building wilderness survival shelters if needed to complete the Wilderness Survival MB. At this time there are nor fire restrictions so this would also be a good campout to work on Second or First Class cooking. The deadline for registration is next Monday (8/13). <More Information> <Register> Note: Since I can't at this time update our web site I should mention that in addition to those already listed on our web site as registered for this campout the following have also registered: George R, Dwane L, Anthony T, Carlo R, and Wes D.

1. By now everyone should have recovered from summer camp at Camp Geronimo. The Scoutmaster had a great time due to the SPL taking charge and all the scouts really being cooperative and helpful. Among the 500 to 600 scouts at the camp our Troop stood out as one of the better Troops. We were one of the few Troops that earned the "Big G – Gold" award. The Scouts kept very busy starting every morning with the 5:30 Polar Bear Swim, and going strong until about 10 at night. Check our web site to see a <list of the MB's> earned and partially earned. We will get pictures from summer camp on the web site soon.
2. I hope that everyone has gotten the word that this Monday at the Troop meeting we are having a Bike Rodeo. Patrol Leaders were supposed to have gotten the word out to their Patrol. If you can, bring a bike and helmet to the meeting. If you can't bring a bike you can be one of the judges.
3. Patrol leaders were also supposed to pass the word about the biking campout next Saturday. We will be camping in Rosedale Canyon on Mt. Withington neat Magdalena. Our plan is to leave the church at 7 AM Saturday morning in Class B uniforms. We will have scouts ride their bikes the last few miles to the campsite. Scouts can ride either 15 miles or 6 miles to the campsite. Packs and gear will be driven into the site. Scouts can also attend the campsite if they don't want to ride. For more information about the campout see the <information> on our web site. To sign up for the outing check the <Registration Link>.
4. Saturday, July 28, is the troops "Great Day of Planning." Please get your ideas for troop activities written down and to the scoutmaster as soon as possible. When we have some ideas submitted we will put them on the web site. On the 28th we will go over ideas and select the best ones for our program next year. Some of the activities we would like to select are:
a. Troop Goals
b. Summer Camp next year
c. Spring Break Trip
d. Monthly Themes
e. Monthly campouts
f. One Day Activities/Hikes/etc.
For more information see the web site <Link>
Sign Up on the web site so we can have lunch for you <Link>
5. Other coming activities
a. August 4: Day trip canoeing at Cochiti Lake (Must pass Swimmers Test to go in canoes)
b. August 24-6: Backpacking Fishing Campout in the San Pedro Parks Wilderness (near Cuba in the Jemez Mountains).
c. We don't have any plans after the end of August so come to the Great Day of Planning and help plan our next great year of scouting.

1) Patrol Leader Elections Tonight
2) Warm Springs Campout
3) Family Picnic
4) Mayors Ball (Money Earning)
5) Brownsea-22

1) Tonight the Patrols will be electing Patrol Leaders for the next six months. Before the election Scouts will have an opportunity to change Patrols if they wish. In general Patrols should have from six to eight members and have at least one Scout who is First Class and willing to be Patrol Leader. This is obviously a very important meeting. If a Scout cannot make the meeting tonight and has strong feeling about which Patrol he would like to be in, please contact the Scoutmaster and make your wishes known.
2) The Warm Springs campout will be in eleven days. Tonight is the deadline if you haven't registered yet. One can always check to see if they are registered for an event by looking on the Troop web site for that event information page. In this case check the Warm Springs Pack-In. This page also contains information on When, Where, Why, and How Much.
3) The Troop is holding a Family Picnic and Court of Honor at Battleship Rock on Memorial Day at noon when we hike out from Warm Springs. Families are encouraged to meet us at Battleship Rock Picnic Grounds for hamburgers and hot dogs. We are asking the families to bring along a side dish and/or desert to share to fill out the meal. We plan to eat at noon and then have a brief Court of Honor to recognize new Troop Officers and Scouts who have advanced since our last Court of Honor. Parents, siblings, and relatives are all invited to attend. However, we would like for families to register on line to let us know how many are coming so there will be plenty of food. <Information> <Register>
4) Don't forget to register to work in helping for the Mayors Ball. Workers are needed on Friday and Saturday, June 3 and 4. Scouts and parents will be paid $10 per hour for their work. The money will go into the Scouts account. We need to know now how many people want to work and what hours whey want to work. <Information> <Register>
5) The Troop currently has three scouts (Joel, Eric and Harry) signed up for the Brownsea-22 camp. There may still be an opportunity to register as I believe there are still 5 places open. If you are interested please call the Scout Office at 345-8603 Ext 10 and ask for Beth. She can tell you if there are still openings and save you a spot until you get the registration form in. Currently there are 55 scouts from NM and Colorado registered for Brownsea. This really is a terrific camp for 1st and 2nd year scouts. <Information>

Troop Committee Chair
Tina Arechederra has resigned as our Troop Committee Chair. Let's give Tina a really big THANKS for all her time and efforts over the past couple of years. She has worked very hard to build and keep our committee functioning. THANKS TINA!
Now we must start the process of selecting a new Troop Committee Chair. As everyone should know the Troop Committee is generally composed of Troop parents and is responsible for recruiting adult leadership, set policy, and support Troop activities.
• To see an overview of committee jobs and responsibilities check this <Link> on our Troop web site and/or the Committee Challenge <Link> on the National web site.

Scoutmaster Corps Meeting
Wednesday, March 14 there will be an important Scoutmaster Corps (SM and ASM's) meeting at the Scoutmasters home from 7:30 to 9 PM.

Very Impressive
NPR's Weekend Edition ran a great interview on Saturday with a Maryland Scout, James Calderwood, who's earned all 122 merit badges. You can hear it at http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=7706158.
One interesting thing James said is that his favorite part of the experience was interacting with merit badge counselors in various fields. I was also surprised at which badge he left until the end. (No, it wasn't Personal Management!)

1) Don't forget that this Saturday is the Troop 174 Invitational Orienteering Meet. Mr. Cote and the Orienteering MB Scouts are setting up three orienteering courses for Scouts to run. These courses are fun and with a little skill each course can be completed in less than an hour. Scouts don't have to do all the courses or stay there all day. Just come out and try you hand at one course whenever you can between the hours of 10 AM and 3 PM. This is also an opportunity to pass off several orienteering related requirements for Second and First Class. Hope to see you Saturday.
< See the Web Site for more Information>
2) Next Monday is the deadline for signing up for the Chaco Canyon Campout November 10-12. This will probably be our last Campout before we get into snow camping, and it should be very interesting seeing all the ruins in the canyon. We will be taking bikes if you want to ride around to the different ruins. Check out the web site to learn more about Chaco Canyon and our campout. <Web Site Info.> <Register>
3) There will be an informal parents meeting during the Troop meeting next Monday. Usually on the last Monday of the Month we pass out calendars, talk briefly about coming program, and answer questions from parents.

Monday's (9/25) Meeting:
1. Parents Meeting: We will hold our normal parents meeting on the last Monday of the month to talk about our coming schedule and answer questions that parents may have. In particular we need to discuss Winter Camping, our Spring Break Trip and next years Summer Camp. We need to get parents input on these rather major activities so please try to have at least one parent in attendance. The meeting will be in the back room of the church and will start about 7:15.
2. Tonight's the BIG night for the Patrol Catapult Contest. Patrols have known about this since July so they should be ready. Be sure to get there early and get your catapult/trebuchet ready for firing by 7 PM. It is going to be dark by 7:30 so be ready to go at 7.

The Cochiti Lake Service project and Webelos Invitational 9/29-10/1. We need all our scouts to participate in these events. Remember the PLC decided that to pass your requirement for Scout Spirit for every Rank Scouts would have to take part in at least 50% of all our Service Projects. Also this is our one opportunity for Webelos to get to know our Troop. It is important that we make a good impression. Right now we have more Webelos signed up than Scouts! It's not too late to sign up. Even if you can only come up for the service project (Saturday morning) or the Webelos invitational (Saturday afternoon and evening).<Link for Information> <Link for Registration>

Troop Committee Meeting is Thursday evening 7 PM at The Arechederra's home. Troop Committee, Scoutmasters, and interested parents should try to attend as there are some important decisions that will have to be discussed.

This afternoon the Patrol Leaders Council took a short caving trip to the Alabaster Cave near San Ysidro and had a great time. The Scouts also found a place where the Scoutmaster couldn't go. Check out the pictures on the web site <Link>

1. IMPORTANT PARENTS MEETING MONDAY:
I know this is a little late, but we would like for each Scout family to be represented by a parent at our end of the month parents meeting this Monday during our Troop meeting. We will be going over our plans for next year and we still need to make some decisions about Summer Camp. We know what the boys want to do, but the camp they have chosen is expensive an a long way away. Before we make that commitment we would like to be sure that we have the support of the parents. Please attend this very important meeting.
2. Advancement Certification:
The Patrol Leaders Council has decided that First Class and above Scouts should be able to pass other Scouts off on requirements through First Class. However, in order to maintain high standards in the Troop, Scouts passing others on requirements should be able to demonstrate that they know the requirements and the necessary skills to pass off the requirements, and they should also know what the Troop requires for a standard of proficiency to pass a requirement. On Saturday, Sept. 9 Scouts wishing to be certified to pass off other Scouts should meet at the church to demonstrate that they know the requirements and the necessary skills. We will discuss and decide on the Troop standards of proficiency. On Saturday, September 9, we will cover requirements for First Aid, Pioneering, and Cooking. Please check the web site for specific times and requirements and register on line if you are interested. <Certification Link>
3. Troop Campout to the Pecos Wilderness

The Council HAT Team will be presenting a seminar for adults on Campout Cooking in Wednesday evening, September 20, from 7-9 PM at the Scout Office (345-8603). If you are interested call the council office and let them know so they can prepare enough literature, etc.
7. Adult and Jr. Leader Training:
The Council will have training for Adult Leaders, Committee Members, Jr. Leaders, and Den Chiefs on Saturday, September 23 at the Sandia Presbyterian Church. Get the straight scoop on the Scouting Program and your job. Take Training! Sign up at the Scout Office.
8. PLC Caving Trip:
As special recognition of the dedication and efforts of our Troop Leaders there will be a caving trip to the Alabaster Cave near San Ysidro on Sunday afternoon, September 24. This trip is only for PL's, APL's, and Troop Officers. See the web site for more information and to register on line. <Link>
9. Webelos Invitational Campout to Cochiti Lake:
I know it's a month off, but get registered now for this really important campout. We will be camping at Cochiti Lake and inviting a bunch of second year Webelos to join us to see what Boy Scouting and especially Troop 174 is all about. We will be working on a service project for the Corps of Engineers for a while Saturday morning, but the rest of the campout will be showing Webelos how much fun Boy Scouts can be. We need all our Scouts to help out on this important campout. We should have information on our web site soom.

9 July 2006

Summer Camp is over and the Troop made an outstanding impression on the camp staff because of their spirit and enthusiasm. The troop fielded two teams in the camps Iron Man contest (swimming, biking and running) and we came in 1st and 3rd. Our record of advancement was one of the best we have ever had. There were a total of 50 Merit Badges earned and another 20 MB's partially earned. In addition the following Scouts advanced in rank:
Thomas Thompson - Life
Abram Lane - Star
Eli Gonzales - Star
Ted Bency - 2nd Class
Sheldon Hall - 2nd Class
James Shelly - 2nd Class
Avery Unsworth - Scout
The following also got up every morning at 5:30 to swim and on Friday all completed the mile swim:
Ted Bency
Duncan Hermanns
Abram "Fish" Lane
Kendall McVey
Sam Leonard
Rick Meyerhein
Phil Hermanns
And, THANKS mainly to all the planning and work done by Phil Hermanns before and at camp to help Scouts with their advancement, and the adult leadership at camp by Herman Gonzales, Phil Hermanns, Mark Leonard, Fred Unsworth, and Mike Wirstrom, this was one of the most enjoyable summer camps for the scoutmaster. Check the web site to see individual advancement and make sure we got everything correct <Link>.
Now it is time to get on with our program, so below are some important announcements of coming events:
1. Computers and Communication MB Class – Mr. Chavez would like to meet with scouts working on these MB's at 6:15 PM at the church for the next two Mondays right before the Troop meeting (starting tomorrow). There are only a few requirements left for scouts to complete the MB's.
2. Service Project (Saturday, July 15) – This Saturday the troop will be doing a service project at the church. Actually two projects 1) Help to put up a flag pole in front of the church (need lots of adults for this), and 2) spread the piles of bark chips around the plants in front of the church. Also Scouts and fathers are invited to the monthly Methodist Men's Breakfast at 8 AM Saturday. Our service projects will start about 9:30 AM and we should be through about 11 AM. Bring gloves, hat, and if possible shovel, rake and wheel barrel. Please sign up on the web site by Tuesday and put in the comments if you will be at the breakfast and/or the service project. <Link>
3. Canoeing Campout at Cochiti Lake (July 21-23) – Tomorrow is the deadline to register for this campout so please register on the Troop web site <Link>. For information about the outing and to see who has already signed up click this <Link>. Remember that scouts must have passed the "Swimmers" test this year in order to go in the canoes. If anyone has not passed the swimmers test please register on the web site and we will arrange to go to Valley Pool on Friday <Link>. Also, scouts need to know the Safe Swim and Safety Afloat plans before going in the boats.
4. Great Day of Planning (Saturday July 29) – Our Troop has no plans after the end of August. Our Great Day of Planning is the time when we all get together and list, discuss, and vote on our plans for the next year. At the Great Day of Planning we would like to determine the following:
a. Monthly Themes – what skills or subjects we want to concentrate on each month
b. Summer Camp – where do we want to go to camp next summer
c. Spring Break – do we want to go on a spring break trip, where
d. Super Activity – do we want to do something special next year like a 50 Miler
e. Monthly Campouts – where do we want to go camping next year
f. Day Activities – Hikes, bike rides, etc.
g. Service Projects – what do we want to do to help others

Write your ideas down, or even better, email them to the Scoutmaster along with any supporting information for the activity. This Troop belongs to the Scouts in it – if you have things you want to do, let us know so we can put them in our annual plan. Register on Line <Link>
5. Troop Family Swim Party (Friday, August 4) The Troop has reserved the swimming pool at Haines Park in Rio Rancho from 6:15-8:15PM on Friday August 4. We would like for all Scouts and their families to come and join us for a Pot Luck Supper and swimming. We will have more information on the Pot Luck Supper as time gets closer, but right now we would like families to register on line <Link> so that we can start planning. Please let us know how many in your family will join us for food, fellowship, and fun.
6. There will also be our normally scheduled activities:
a. Patrol Leaders Council meeting Sunday July 9
b. Scoutmaster Corps Meeting Wednesday, July 12
c. Troop Committee Meeting, Thursday, July 27

1. Scouts Needed Saturday, April 29:
Our Troop has been asked to lead the "Day in Paradise" parade this Saturday. The "Day in Paradise" activities are sponsored by the Bernalillo Co. Parks and Recreation. I know this is very short notice, but we would like as many scouts as possible to spare an hour to support the Troop and Scouting. Scouts should meet at the Blakes near Paradise Blvd and Universe in full uniform at 11:15 AM. The parade which we will be leading will start at 11:45, and will go from Universe to the Paradise Hills park (about 1/2 mile). At the park the scouts will post the flags for the opening ceremonies. After that Scouts can either go home or stay and enjoy the "Day in Paradise" activities, games, booths and music. If you can help out please let the Scoutmaster know by clicking the following and sending: <I Can Help>.
2. All Scouts and leaders should plan on attending Jake Wellman's Eagle Court of Honor on Saturday, May 6 at 6 PM. The Eagle rank is the highest rank in scouting and deserves special recognition.
3. Election of Troop Officers (May 8-15):
Every six months the Troop elects a Senior Patrol Leader, Troop Officers, and Patrol Leaders. Every Scout has some leadership position in either the Troop or his Patrol. This assures that every Scout supports his Patrol or the Troop in some way. This Monday we will be passing out a leadership survey for every Scout to fill out indicating what positions they would like to fill. To see what the duties of patrol or Troop offices entail click on the links below:
Patrol Jobs and Responsibilities
Troop Officer Jobs and Responsibilities
Leadership Agreement for PL's and Troop Officers
Leadership Survey
Please be thinking about how you would like to serve your Patrol or Troop. Our plan is to elect a Senior Patrol Leader on May 8, and Patrol Leaders on May 15. After Patrol Leaders have been elected the Senior Patrol Leader will appoint the other Troop Officers. The new Troop officers will take office on the first of June.
4. Order of the Arrow Spring Conclave (May 19-21):
5. The OA Spring Conclave will be held at Camp Rand May 19-21. If you were tapped out for the OA you should plan on attending to complete your ordeal. Members should attend for fun and fellowship and to help get camp set up for the summer. If you want a ride to the Conclave please register on the web site <Register> Scouts need to also register through the Scout office.
6. Game and Fish Department Program (May 20-21)
The Game and Fish Department will be holding exhibits and activities for Scouts and other youth at the Rifle Range on the West mesa near the Double Eagle airport. They will have archery, .22, skeet, and black powder shooting, fishing, and other things to see and do. While this is not a Troop activity it could be fun for Patrols or individual Scouts. We will pass out more information as it becomes available.
7. Warm Springs Campout, Court of Honor, and Family Picnic (May 27-9)
Our next campout will be a pack-in from Jamez Falls (where scouts can earn the coveted Polar Bear Bead) to Warm Springs (where there is swimming in warm water, Indian ruins, and lots of interesting things to see and do), to Battleship Rock Picnic Grounds where (hopefully) parents will meet us at noon with hamburgers, and all sorts of good things to eat. Lunch will be followed by a short Court of Honor. We should be finished by 2 PM. <Register>
8. Summer Camp (June 25-July 1)
If you haven’t signed up for summer camp do so soon. We will be going to our Council Camp Frank Rand. This is a week filled with fun and activity including swimming, archery, shooting, pioneering, life saving, leatherworking, basketry, and many other activities. Look over the Summer Camp booklet passed out by Mr. Hermanns and start thinking about the activities you want to do at camp. <Register>

Upcoming Events

2/23 Thursday: Troop Committee Meeting 7-8:30 PM at the Arechederra's home.

2/25 Saturday: NOTE CHANGE! The Troop had originally scheduled a snow campout with cross country skiing for this weekend. However with the lack of snow the Patrol Leaders Council decided that they would rather have a one day (Saturday) GPS Challenge.
This would be an opportunity for scouts to learn how to use a GPS by finding caches of food and other items in the escarpment area west of the church. Each Patrol would have their own caches to find and then all patrols would end up at the same location for supper and a campfire. Currently we have had only one Scout and one leader indicate that they would like to participate in this event. PLEASE, if you are interested please sign up by Monday on the web site. Otherwise the event will have to be canceled.

2/25 Saturday: Pack 12 is having their Crossover at the Montgomery Church of Christ (Montgomery & Louisiana) and we will need about 4 Scouts to help out from about 6:30 to 7:30 PM. Please e-mail the Scoutmaster if you are interested in helping.

2/27 Monday: There will be the monthly Parents meeting during the Troop meeting. We will present information on Summer Camp, Brownsea and Junior Leader Training at the meeting. We will also explain the Spaghetti Supper (March 18), answer questions, and cover the March schedule.

3/2 Thursday: Ventana Ranch Elementary School could use some Scouts to help out at their Book Fair from about 4:30 to 8:30 PM. We should have more information on Monday at the meeting.

3/4 Saturday: Second Havasupai Conditioning Hike. This time we will be hiking about 7 miles in about 4 hours. Again people going with the Troop to the Havasupai canyon for Spring Break should take this hike. Bring full pack (Personal gear) and 2 quarts of water. We will be meeting at 8 AM at the Smith's on Golf Course and Paseo. Please register on Line.

3/6 Monday: During the Troop meeting, there will be a meeting for Parents of New Scouts to talk about Troop policies, and scout camping equipment. All parents of new Scouts are encouraged to attend.
Adult Training:
3/11 Saturday: The Council High Adventure Team will be presenting an in depth training course on BACKPACKING from 8 AM to 4 PM at the Scout Office. This is an excellent course for adults who want to get all the information on Scout Backpacking. The course will be led by Fred Unsworth.

April 8 Saturday: The Council will be having a number of Adult Leader Training Courses at Grant Middle School. The courses of most interest to leaders and parents of Troop 174 will be:

10/30/05

A last minute reminder that there will NOT be a Troop Meeting tomorrow night (Halloween), and a few important notes concerning coming events.

1) A Big THANKS to Scouts Arthur Cox, Wesley Dicks, Greg Hampton, Perry Hill, and Abram Lane who volunteered their Friday night to help at the Halloween Carnival put on by the Paradise Hills Community Center. Check out the Pictures.
2) The Hamburger and Brats sale at the Sunflower Market went very well. Mr. Hall is counting the money so we will know how much was made by next Monday. From about 10:30 to 3 PM there was always a line of at least 20 people, and I would guess that we served several hundred people. A number of scouts helped out, but a special thanks to Mr. McVey, Mr. Keith, and Mr. Hall who did most of the cooking. Check out the pictures.
3) 10/31 No Troop Meeting
a) However this is the deadline to sign up for the Chaco Canyon campout so please sign up on the web site if you haven't already signed up. We currently have reserved camping space for 30 people, but only have 21 signed up. We also do not have enough transportation at this time. <Check Details & List of People Signed Up>
4) Thursday 11/3:
a) Troop 714 Octoberfest at the Elks Lodge in Rio Rancho.
b) Cherokee Chapter Order of the Arrow Meeting 7 PM at the Taylor Ranch Community Center.
5) Sunday 11/6: Patrol Leaders Council Meeting 2-4 PM for all Troop Officers, PL's and APL's
6) Monday 11/7: Troop Meeting
a) We will be conducting a leadership survey of all scouts in preparation for the Troop Elections on 11/21. It is important that all scouts hold some leadership position in either the Troop or the Patrol. This is also the best time for Scouts to change Patrols if they want to change, A copy of the survey can be found on the web site under Resources/Scout. Please look over the survey and be prepared to fill one out at the meeting on 11/21. Please be sure to know which nights you will not be available for Patrol Meetings as that is an important part of the survey.
7) Wednesday 11/9 Scoutmaster Corps Meeting 7:30 PM at the Scoutmaster's home.
8) Thursday 11/10: District Leaders Roundtable 7 PM at All Saints Lutheran Church.

General Plan for Election of Troop Officers
On Monday 11/21 the whole Troop will elect the Senior Patrol Leader. See Requirements and Responsibilities for the SPL.
We will also start (re)organizing Patrols. Patrols do not have to change, but there are a couple requirements to be a Patrol:
o A Patrol must have at least 5 and no more than 8 Scouts.
o A Patrol must have a Patrol Leader (should be at least First Class) See Requirements and Responsibilities for being a Patrol Leader.
Troop Officers will be appointed by the SPL after PL's have been elected by their Patrol. Qualified PL's are much more important to the Troop then other Troop officers like Scribe, Quartermaster, etc. To see a list of requirements for all Troop Offices.

Sorry for the extra NewsMail, but there were a couple opportunities for scouts that just came up. These were discussed at the meeting last night, but we thought everyone would like to see something in writing.
1. There is a money raising opportunity for scouts on Sunday the 24th at the Sunflower Market. Morgan Hall has arranged with the market for scouts to cook and sell hamburgers and hot dogs. This is something that the market has done before and did it for Morgan's brothers pack a couple weeks ago. There is an opportunity for the scouts to earn a couple hundred dollars. Time is short and Morgan needs to know who wants to help out by this Sunday (9/18). All of the money earned will go directly to the scout's account. If you're interested please call Morgan at 792-0331 and/or sign up on the Troop Web Site. Check the Web Site for a little more information http://www.troop174nm.org/permission/050924Registration.htm
2. For Scouts who like dogs and would like to do a good turn service project the Watermelon Mountain Ranch (an animal foster and adoption) agency is requesting volunteers to walk and give water to hurricane rescued dogs on the September 17 & 18 Adoption-athon. There is more information on the Troop Web Site at http://www.troop174nm.org/permission/050917service.htm . Again, time is short so call and make arrangements for a time to help out.

Last week was a really busy scouting week with a Patrol Leaders Council meeting on Sunday, a Troop meeting on Monday, a Scoutmaster's Corps meeting on Wednesday, a Troop Committee meeting on Thursday, Swimming on Friday and cleaning the Troop shed on Saturday.

The Patrol leaders council came up with some good ideas for troop program on the San Gregorio Lake campout. We are planning a Coup Feather contest between patrols on Saturday afternoon. Each Patrol will be given a number of feathers to start and will then challenge other Patrols to short scoutcraft skill contests. The winning Patrol will take a feather from the loosing patrol. The contests should be decided by Monday night at the meeting.

At the Scoutmaster Corps meeting the Patrol Advisors were selected for the new patrols. We want to thank for the new Patrol Advisors for volunteering!!

  1. Flaming Eagles - Dale Perry
  2. Evergreens - Tim Jerome
  3. Roadkill - Kristi Milburn
  4. Thunderbolt - Phil Hermanns
  5. Blue Moon Wolves - Ken Arechederra

The Patrol Advisors are responsible for:

  1. Helping Patrol Leader to plan, and supervising regularly scheduled Patrol meetings at least twice a month.
  2. Work with and guide Patrol during Troop meeting Patrol Corners.
  3. Serve as a resource for the Patrol

The Troop Committee is off to a great start after the meeting at the Arechederra's home on Thursday. After reports from the various sub-committees a number of issues were discussed. The Committee Chair and the Scoutmaster will be meeting with individual sub committees during the first week of July to discuss the most important needs of the Troop. While anyone is invited to Troop Committee meetings, our plan in the future if for the individual sub-committees to meet during troop meetings or other times at their convenience, and have the sub-committee chairs give reports and learn of new program needs at the monthly Troop Committee meetings. That way sub-committees like Advancement, Membership, Equipment, Finance, and Outdoors, should have more time to concentrate on their own specific needs.

Our first swim night was very successful with about 18 scouts completing their swimmers test. Our next session will be July 8, and we would like to get the rest of the Scouts who are going to Summer Camp tested and passed off on their Swimmers test. Any scout not tested before camp will have to be tested when they get to camp. Also, only scouts qualified as Swimmers may go in boats or canoes at camp and our canoeing campout in August. Be a Swimmer! If you're not a good swimmer, we can help you. All scouts are welcome to come swimming on the 8th even if they have already been tested. The cost is $0.25.

A BIG THANKS to all those who helped clean and organize the Troop Shed and closet on Saturday. It was a chore, but it looks really great. Thanks to Scouts: Daniel Arechederra, Gabe Arechederra, Kendall McVey, Anthony Thompson, and Mario Thompson, and to adult leaders: Ken and Tina Arechederra, Marina DiPilato, Tim Jerome, Rick Meyerhein, Kristi Milburn, and Chuck Thompson.

The new Troop T-Shirts are now in, and we will be giving one to the new Scouts on at the Troop Meeting Monday. Other Scouts/leaders may purchase Shirts for $7 each. We would like for every Scout going to Summer Camp to have at least one Troop T-shirt for camp. Also, for the rest of the summer (until School starts) scouts may wear Class-B uniforms (Troop T-shirt and Scout pants) to Troop meetings.

Coming Events:

24-26 June: San Gregorio Lake campout in the San Pedro Parks Wilderness near Cuba. Scouts should have already registered, but there still may be an opportunity so if you want to go register on line and ask at the meeting Monday. This will be a fun campout with fishing, scoutcraft training, and games. There is always Advancement ff you are prepared.

27 June (Monday): Parent Meeting 7:10am-8:00pm

Parents are invited to attend our Troop's Monthly Parent Meeting to discuss:  Mr. Meyerhein's Q&A session, Next Month's Calendar, Topic/Theme of Month, Committee Update, Scout's Account Report.  This meeting is also an opportunity for you as parent to meet other parents!!!  Topics may vary from month to month, but we generally hold an informational meeting for parents on the last meeting night of the month.

8 July (Friday) Swimming at Valley Pool for fun and/or testing for Swimmer qualification. Scouts should be tested before Summer Camp and need to be certified Swimmers to ride in boats or canoes.

9 July (Saturday): Eagle Court of Honor for Jordan Clauser. One of the most impressive ceremonies in Scouting is the Eagle Court of Honor, and all scouts and their families are invited to this special recognition for Jordan Clauser at 7 PM at the Paradise Hills Methodist Church. While it is our hope that every Scout make Eagle, nationally only about 4 percent of scouts achieve Eagle. When one does their achievement is recognized not only by the Troop and parents, but also by officials across the country. Come and help us recognize Jordan who has been a Scout in Troop 174 for six years, camped out over 150 nights, and holds many other records in the Troop.

16-23 July Peaceful Valley, CO Summer Camp

Swim Tests:  The Troop will be going to Valley Pool to get ready for Summer Camp and having fun!!  Your scout should attend at least one of the following sessions to complete their swimming test.  On 6/17 and 7/8, meet at Church at 6pm with $0.25 and will be returning by 9 PM.

New Mexico and Colorado Medical Forms:  If you have not completed your medical forms please contact Phil Hermanns or Mary Thompson.  Both the New Mexico and the Colorado are required to participate in Summer Camp. Phil Hermanns will be getting some additional information on summer camp on the web site soon.

30 July (Saturday):  Great Day of Planning 10am-3pm

Mark your calendars!  The Scouts will meeting to plan the 2005-2006 Calendar.  We will be looking at:

  1. 2006-Spring Break
  2. 2006 Summer Camp
  3. Monthly Themes
  4. Weekend Camp-outs

We need your input, too.  If you have any inputs, comments contact Tina Arechederra. We are gathering ideas now so that on the 30th we can have a lot of ideas to choose from. Scouts should write their ideas down and give them to their Patrol Leader.

19-21 August Canoeing Campout at Cochiti Lake. Don't forget you must have passed your Swimmers test this year to go in the canoes.

1)      A big THANKS to Jordan Clauser who has been our faithful SPL for the past six months, but he will be moving into the Crew.. Jordan has been in the Troop for over six years and has amassed some amazing statistics for participation. He has now earned his Eagle Rank, although he it has not yet been formally presented. Jordan now holds the "Troops Best" record for almost all of the statistics we keep
162 Nights Camping (All Time Leader)
220 Miles Backpacked (All Time Leader)
25 One Day Activities (All Time Leader)
>100 Hours Service(All Time Leader)
> 80% Meeting Attendance (near if not at the top)
(There are a lot of times we didn't keep records)
Leadership
12 Months -Assistant Patrol Leader (2 times)
18 Months - Patrol Leader (3 times)
6 Months - Troop Scribe
12 Months - Senior Patrol Leader (2 Times)

Jordan has certainly had an outstanding career with Troop 174 and deserves considerable credit for making Troop 174 what it has become. THANKS JORDAN.

2)      Troop Reorganization

a)  Crew 174 has now separated from the Troop, and while we plan to maintain a close relationship, each will be going their own way under separate leadership. Both will be sponsored by the Methodist Men's Fellowship and will continue to meet at the church on Monday nights. Mike Chavez will be the Crew Advisor, and the Crew will generally only meet every other week.

b) Last Monday the Troop elected Daniel Arechederra as the new Senior Patrol Leader. Congratulations Daniel! Next Monday we will be reorganizing Patrols and electing Patrol Leaders, so be sure to be there to get into the Patrol you want. Our new SPL will be talking to Scouts to determine who would be the best Troop Officers (ASPL, Scribe, and Quartermaster). The SPL in consultation with the SM will select those Troop Officers over the next couple of weeks.

3)      Other Activities

a)  Youth Protection Program next Monday - The Troop is required to discuss youth protection with the Scouts at least once a year. Mrs. Liz Leonard (a nurse and Troop Patent) will be putting on the Youth Protection Program and showing a movie called "A Time To Tell" which is geared to boys of Scout age. She previewed the movie with parents last Monday, but is willing to show an introductory preview and discuss the movie with parents at 7 PM this Monday. Then she will be showing it to the Troop.

b) Swim Nights, Fridays, June 17, July 8, and July 15. We will be going down to Valley pool to check the swimming ability of Scouts and help them to become better swimmers.. For Summer Camp, each Scout must be tested to determine what aquatic activities he can take part in and what parts of the pool he can go in. Anyone who can swim 100 yards (including 25 with the Elementary Back Stroke) and can float is considered a "Swimmer". Swimmers can go in all areas of the pool and in boats. If you can swim 25 yards, you are considered a "Beginner" and can go only to a depth of 5 feet in the Pool. If you can't swim 25 yards you are considered a "Non-Swimmer" and can go only to a depth of 3.5 feet in the pool. We would like to have all Scouts Swimmers by Summer Camp. The cost of the Swim nights is $0.25, but we need to have people sign up on line so we can have the necessary support and supervision. Let us know in the comments if you think you are a Swimmer, Beginner, or Non-swimmer. Scouts are invited to go to one or all of these sessions. If you need help, plan on going to all of them. Everyone going to Summer camp must make at least one of these nights or you may have a very long wait getting tested at camp.

4)      Major Campouts and Activities

a)  OA Spring Conclave - May 20-22 at Camp Rand. Things are pretty well set for this activity with 4 adults and about 10 Scouts attending. Several Scouts were recently elected into the OA and will be undergoing their Ordeal t become full members. The Scouts recently elected are: Daniel Arechederra, Eli Gonzales, Morgan Hall, Duncan Hermanns, Matthew Leik, Kendall McVey, and Thomas Thompson. Pam Harris and Ken McVey were also selected as adults to join the OA. A Troop can only elect Scouts once a year, and Scouts must be First Class and have 15 nights Camping. Congratulations all candidates!

b) Warm Springs Campout and Court of Honor - May 28-30 in the Jemez Mountains. Everyone should have registered by now and it looks like we will have 17 Scouts, 10 Adults, and 2 guests. The Venture Crew will also be joining us on this campout, although they will have their own program. They did offer to host a joint Campfire on Sunday night. Thanks Crew!
At Noon Monday the Troop will hike into the Battleship Rock picnic grounds ready for an outstanding picnic lunch provided by the parents. We hope that all Troop families (whether they went on the campout or not) will join us for the Picnic Lunch followed by a Court of Honor. This will be the last chance to formally recognize Scout advancement until this fall so try to be there. Try to get there a little early because parking can be a challenge on Memorial Day Weekend. We should be all finished and ready to go home by 2 PM though you're welcme to stay around and play in the stream and/or enjoy the scenery.

c)  Brownsea and NYLT (JLT) June 5-11 at Camp Rand. The following Scouts from Troop 174 will be going to Brownsea Camp with Scouts from all over NM and Colorado.

i)        Gabe Arechederra

ii)       Lee Barfoot

iii)     Wes Dicks

iv)     Carl Glaspie

v)      Morgan Hall

vi)     Jack Harner
